Series Scope and Contents: The materials contained in this series consists of correspondence, minutes, programs, clippings, presentations, oral history interviews, and photographs pertaining to the history of Durham, North Carolina, the history of Duke University Medical Center, and Piedmont Orthopedic Society meetings from 1954 to 2010. These materials were prepared for the 2010 Piedmont Orthopedic Society Meeting at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. File types include images (.JPG, .GIF), videos (.WAV, .MPG), PDF, and Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Access Database. The original carriers for these files were DVDs. The digital files date from 2000 to 2010, with original material dating from 1949 to 2010.

Processing Information: Material in this collection was processed using AXAEM's Electronic Records Processing module, which incorporates Bagger as a way to package electronic files with technical metadata. Captured digital content was ingested into AXAEM, where ClamAV Anti-Virus software detected and cleaned any computer viruses. The cleaned files were saved on the Duke University Medical Center Archives' secure server with a regular backup schedule. Includes 2,734 files totaling 4.87 GB that are available for research.

Historical/Biographical Note

Joseph Leonard Goldner was born on November 18, 1918, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Oscar Goldner and Rose Wolfson. He earned a BA degree from the University of Minnesota in 1939 and BS and MD degrees from the University of Nebraska in 1943. He was a member of the Navy during World War II, serving as a medical officer from 1944 to 1946. He completed orthopaedic residency training at Duke University from 1946 to 1950 and joined the Orthopaedic Surgery staff in 1950. While at Duke he established the first clinical Hand Surgery program in the Southeast. Goldner was Duke's chief of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1967 to 1984. He became the James B. Duke Professor in 1979. Goldner retired from Duke in 1988, although he continued to teach and attend conferences until his death.

Goldner was internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of orthopaedic surgery, particularly for developing a method of surgical management of congenital clubfoot. He was also lauded for his management of cerebral palsy and of hand, upper extremity, spinal, and pain problems.

Goldner was involved in numerous professional organizations, including serving as the president of the American Orthopaedic Association, the Southern Medical Association, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association. He received many honors and recognitions for his professional achievements, including the Governor's Award for Physician of the Year in 1967 and the Distinguished Civilian Service Award by the Secretary of the Army in 1981. Goldner also served as a Visiting Professor in numerous institutions and gave many lectures around the world on orthopaedic surgery.

Goldner married Eunice (Ken) Ruth Kensinger in 1944. They had two children. He died on December 20, 2005.
