The Duke Midwifery Service (DMS) provided obstetric and gynecologic services to low-risk pregnant women and education to first-year residents, medical students, physician assistant students, midwifery students and nursing students. The Service was established in 1999 under the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Duke University School of Medicine. This collection contains materials from Amy MacDonald, CNM, and former DMS Director from 1999 to 2013. Types of materials include administrative records, birth logs, grant information, correspondence, curriculum materials, clinic forms and handouts for patients in English and Spanish, photographs, digital files, and a lab coat. Materials date from 1989 to 2021.
Collection contains the administrative records, birth logs, grant information, Centering Pregnancy curriculum, El Centro clinic forms, patient handouts, and the professional papers of the programs first Certified Nurse-Midwife, Amy MacDonald. Also included are photographs, news clippings, digital files, posters, and a lab coat. Materials date from 1989 to 2013.

Series Scope and Contents: This series documents the organization, operational functions, educational outreach, and patient services of the Duke Midwifery Service. Contains annual reports, awards, correspondence, grant applications, histories, meetings, organizational records, resident orientation materials, staff schedules, resources, and guidelines. Also included are the Midwifery birth logs for Certified Nurse Midwife assisted labor and deliveries at Duke University Medical Center and the Durham County Regional Hospital. The birth logs were used prior to the adoption of Obstetrics Trace View (OBTV) and Epic electronic record management systems. Some of these materials contain confidential patient information and are restricted under law by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Series Scope and Contents: This series documents the Centering Pregnancy and Centering Parenting programs coordinated by the Duke Midwifery Service. Contains curriculum, reports, clinic resources, and grants funded by the March of Dimes. Centering programming in Durham, North Carolina, first began at the Lincoln Community Health Center in 2004 before relocating to El Centro Hispano in 2009. Materials date from 1997 to 2016.

Subseries Scope and Contents: This subseries contains program policies, procedures, promotional materials, schedules, grant information, facilitator and participant guidebooks. Materials date from 2006 to 2016.
Subseries Scope and Contents: These materials were created for Spanish-speaking Centering participants to provide participants with information on women's reproductive health in their preferred language. The materials were kept in 2 suitcases to transform a community room at El Centro Hispano's room into a clinical space for clinical care. The clinic was staffed by Spanish speaking medical workers, and also provided vaccines. Materials date from 1997 to 2011.

Series Scope and Contents: This series documents Amy MacDonald's professional career as Director of the Duke Midwifery Service. Contains received professional correspondence, emails, notes from meetings with staff, lectures, service awards, compliment cards, personal ephemera, and artifacts. Materials date from 1997 to 2019.

Processing Information: Material in this collection was processed using AXAEM's Electronic Records Processing module, which incorporates Bagger as a way to package electronic files with technical metadata. Captured digital content was ingested into AXAEM, where ClamAV Anti-Virus software detected and cleaned any computer viruses. The cleaned files were saved on the Duke University Medical Center Archives' secure server with a regular backup schedule. The Centering program's participant photo releases are on file with the Durham Health Department.
