Biographical / historical:

Dr. Kevin Lindsey Thomas, MD, received his undergraduate degree from Emory University. While still an undergraduate, he was recruited to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's (UNC-CH) Medical Education Development Program by the Program Director and long-time UNC administrator, Larry Keith. This summer-long program, taught by medical school faculty, is where Thomas took his first medical school classes. Because of this experience, he decided to pursue medical school and attended UNC-CH where Keith remained a mentor. Thomas graduated with his MD in 1999.

Thomas completed his Internal Medicine Residency (1999-2002) and Fellowships in Cardiology (2002-2003, 2004-2007) at Duke University Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine (2003-2004). Upon completion of his training, Thomas stayed at Duke and is Associate Professor of Medicine in Duke's Department of Medicine, Member in the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and Assistant Dean For Underrepresented Faculty for the School of Medicine. As a cardiac electrophysiologist, Thomas' clinical focus is on heart rhythm problems in his patients. As a researcher, his focus is on health disparities with the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for people of races, genders, and ages.

Throughout his career, Thomas has led multiple equity initiatives within Duke as a faculty member, including serving as Director of Faculty Diversity and Health Disparities Research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute and as Co-director of the Duke Health Disparities Research curriculum, and chairing the Dean's Advisory Council for Underrepresented Minority Faculty.
