Biographical Note

Jerome Sylvan Harris was born February 27, 1909 in New York City to Mark and Mary (Marcus) Harris. Jerome Harris received his AB from Dartmouth College in 1929 and his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1933. He underwent additional training as an intern at the University of Chicago Clinics in 1934, then as a resident at Boston Children's Hospital from 1935 to1936. Harris was one of Wilburt C. Davison's recruits to the new Duke University School of Medicine. He came to Duke as a biochemist in 1936 and became an instructor in pediatrics in 1937 under J. Buren Sidbury, one of two pediatricians in the state of North Carolina when Duke opened. Harris held appointments in biochemistry and pediatrics, and he became the second chairman of the Department of Pediatrics from 1954 to1968. Later, Harris was named the first J. Buren Sidbury Professor. At the time when sub-specialties were developing, he trained himself in pediatric cardiology and introduced sub-specialties to the Department of Pediatrics. Harris retired from Duke University Medical Center in 1979. Harris conducted extensive research in metabolic diseases of children and in pediatric cardiology.

During World War II, Harris served in the Army Medical Corps, as chief of the Communicable Disease Section of the General Hospital at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He served as a consultant to the National Board of Medical Examiners from 1956 to 1960. He was a member of the Human Embryology and Development Study Section of the National Institutes of Health from 1959 to 1963. He was a member of the board of directors of Durham Child Guidance Clinic from 1950 to 1954.
