Biographical Note

Dorothy Eugenia Richards Lambeth

Dorothy Eugenia Richards Lambeth was born June 26, 1911, in Rowland, North Carolina, to Lewis Patterson Richards and Effie Isla (nee Braswell) Richards. Lambeth attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, and received a degree in nursing from Duke University in 1939. Lambeth was head surgical nurse at Duke during the early 1940s. She was an assistant nursing arts instructor at Duke Hospital in 1942. During World War II, Lambeth served in the U.S. Red Cross Home Service and as an instructor for the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. She worked as a registered nurse at Blount County Hospital. She was a member of the Doctors Wives Medical Auxiliary at Blount Memorial Hospital, Sam Houston School Association, Friends of the Blount County Library, and the Maryville College Chilhowee Club.

Lambeth married Samuel S. Lambeth, III, on December 19, 1942. They had one child. Lambeth died on November 1, 2002, in Maryville, Tennessee.

Samuel S. Lambeth

Samuel S. Lambeth, III, was born in Bedford, Virginia, on November 13, 1913 to Samuel S. Lambeth, II, and Margaret (nee Bolling) Lambeth. Lambeth graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Bedford, in 1930. He received his BS from Randolph Macon College in 1934 and his MD from the University of Virginia in 1939. Lambeth served the U.S. Army as a captain of the Medical Corp with the 50th Field Hospital during World War II, where he served in Northern France and Rhineland campaigns and attended the Medical Field Service School in France. His military service spanned from 1942 to 1946. Lambeth was a teaching assistant at Duke University Medical Center from 1946 to 1948, where he did his internship and residency, specializing in gynecology and obstetrics.

Lambeth was a member of the staff of the Tennessee Memorial Hospital and assistant clinical professor of gynecology at the University Hospital in Knoxville. Lambeth served on the active and courtesy medical staff at Blount Memorial and became a member of Blount Memorial Hospital's honorary medical staff in 1994. He was president of Blount County Cancer Society in 1964 and president and director of the Blount County United Fund in 1965. Lambeth was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Phi Delta Theta. During his medical career, Lambeth delivered approximately 8,000 babies and authored at least three medical articles.

Lambeth married Dorothy Eugenia Richards on December 19, 1942. They had one child. Lambeth died on January 11, 1996, in Maryville, Tennessee.
