Historical Note

Duke Neurosurgery was created in 1937, although it did not become a department until July 1, 2015. Prior to becoming a department, Neurosurgery was a division under the Department of Surgery.

The Department of Neurosurgery maintains a clinical practice at Duke's three hospitals (Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and Duke Raleigh Hospital), as well as providing neurosurgical care at the Durham VA Hospital. Along with a clinical practice, the department also offers a comprehensive residency training program with fellowships offered in six sub-specialty areas.

The internationally recognized Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, recognized as a Program of Distinction within Duke Health, is housed within the Duke Department of Neurosurgery.

The current Department Chair is John H. Sampson.

Former Division Chiefs are listed below:
  • Dr. Barnes Woodhall, 1937-1960
