The bulk of the materials contain subject files from the School of Medicine's Dean's Office. Types of materials are correspondence, reports, emails, schedules, notes, planning, digital files, contracts, presentations, vendor information, and philanthropic foundation materials, and Wilburt C. Davison reprints. Also includes the Medical Center Executive Committee meeting materials and Dean's Office "Noteworthy Posters Series" and a portrait of Edward W. Holmes. Also includes the Dean Klotman and the School of Medicine's "Turning a Moment into a Movement: Dismantling Racism in the Duke School of Medicine and Beyond" video and panel discussion, which is affiliated with Duke Health's Moment to Movement, Duke Health's collective stand against systemic racism and injustice. Biographical / historical:

Dean's Office
From the establishment of Duke University School of Medicine in 1927 until 1999, the Chancellor and the Dean of the School of Medicine were the same positions. In 1999, the positions split, and the Dean's office became separate from the Chancellor's office. The new role was named Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Dean, School of Medicine.

The Dean of Duke University School of Medicine, advised by a leadership team of vice deans, chief diversity and communications officers, department chairs, and institute directors. Associate and assistant deans also assist the dean with the oversight and management of the School of Medicine's clinical faculty, basic science faculty, health professions students, PhD students, and staff employees.
There have been seven deans of the School of Medicine. They are listed below.

R. Sanders (Sandy) Williams
R. Sanders (Sandy) Williams was born in Athens, Georgia, in 1948. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1970 and his MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1974. Williams completed his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as a cardiology fellowship at Duke. He was a Professor of Medicine at Duke from 1980 to 1990. Williams left Duke to take a professorship at the University of Texas' Southwestern Medical Center where he directed cardiovascular research and medicine. Williams returned to Duke in 2001 to take the role of Dean of the School of Medicine. In 2007, he became the Senior Vice Chancellor, taking on a direct leadership role for Duke's global strategy in 2008. He was the founding Dean of the Duke-NUS Gradate Medical School of Singapore and lead negotiator for major Duke programs in China and elsewhere abroad. Until 2010, he was the Richard and Patricia Johnson University Professor Senior Vice Chancellor and Senior Advisor for International Strategy at Duke. After leaving Duke, Williams became President of Gladstone Institutes, Gladstone's Robert W. and Linda L. Mahley Distinguished Professor, as well as a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He was a director of the Bristol-Meyers Squibb Company from 2006 to 2013. He came director of Amgen in 2014. Williams is also on the board of directors for the Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp).

Williams' specialties are in biochemistry, cardiology, cardiovascular diseases, developmental biology, and molecular biology. He has discovered genes, proteins, and pathways that control development, proliferation, cell size, and differentiation of cardiac and skeletal muscle cells (myocytes). His laboratory defined basic principles of how these cells adapt to changing physiological demands associated with exercise or disease states.
Williams has been active in professional societies and editorial boards of academic journals. He has served as President of the Association of University Cardiologists, Chairman of the Research Committee of the American Heart Association, on the editorial boards of leading biomedical journals, on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health, and on the Board of External Advisors of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He has been elected into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians. In 2005, he received the Pioneer Award from the Samuel Dubois Cook Society for his social justice work.
