William W. Shingleton was born in Stantonsburg, North Carolina, on November 26, 1917. He attended the University of North Carolina for the first three years of his undergraduate career before completing his bachelor's degree at the Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina, in 1939, where he graduated summa cum laude. In 1943, he received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University.
In 1950, Shingleton completed his postgraduate general surgery training at Duke University Medical Center. He joined the faculty at Duke as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1952. In 1959, he was promoted to full Professor of Surgery and named the Edwin L. Jones Jr. and Lucille Finch Jones Professor of Cancer Research. In 1964, Shingleton was made the Chief of General Surgery, a position he held until 1982. Shingleton was also one of the signers of the National Cancer Act in 1971. This piece of Congressional legislation appropriated federal funds to build dedicated cancer centers nationwide. The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Duke University was developed as a result and became one of the original twelve cancer centers in the United States. Shingleton was the founding Director of the Duke Cancer Center, where he served from 1971 until his retirement in 1987. Under his leadership, the Duke Cancer Center expanded in size and was eventually rated the number one cancer center by the National Cancer Advisory Board. In 1987, the William W. Shingleton Cancer Research Professorship was created to support new cancer research initiatives.
Shingleton served on the board of numerous professional surgical societies. He was a founding member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, director of the American Cancer Society, president of North Carolina Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes. He was also named to the National Cancer Advisory Board twice, by Presidents Nixon and Ford. He was also recognized by the American Surgical Association and the Southern Surgical Association with the Arthur Shipley Award, and authored more than 85 peer-reviewed publications.
After his retirement, Duke recognized Shingleton's successful and influential career by naming him Director Emeritus of the Duke University Cancer Center and Professor Emeritus of Surgery.
Shingleton died on January 2, 2005 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. - Acquisition information:
