Biographical / historical:

Alejandro Barbagelata was born and raised in Argentina. He received his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires and completed a cardiology fellowship at the Favaloro Foundation at Sanatorio Guemes in Buenos Aires. In 1992 Barbagelata was sent to the Duke Clinical Research Institute by Dr. Rene G. Favaloro and worked with Duke to develop the Latino version of the Duke Databank for Cardiovascular Diseases from 1992 to 1994. In 2005 he became Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas, Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX. In 2006 he became director of an advanced heart failure fellowship program at UTMB. He was the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) primary physician in the Heart Transplant program from 2011 to 2013. He has been involved with the Duke University Cooperative Cardiovascular Society (DUCCS) since 1997, and in 2010 he became a member of the DUCCS Board of Directors. As of 2019, Barbagelata is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine/Cardiology at Duke.
Alejandro Barbagelata married Silvina Diaz Usandivaras. They have three daughters.
