Historical Note

The F. Bayard Carter Society, better known as the "Nick Carter Travel Club" met for the first time in September 1951. The Society's was named after F. Bayard Carter, professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1931 to 1964. The constitution states that "the purpose of the Society shall be the promotion of scientific knowledge by assembly and interchange of ideas and practice related particularly to obstetrics and gynecology." The Society was initially organized by 15 former residents of Duke's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and by Carter's retirement comprised of 67 house officers who furthered their post-graduate education at Duke under his tutelage. Today the Society is composed of house officers, fellows, and faculty of Duke's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Society continues to meet every four years at Duke to renew old ties and to observe progress. As of 2003, the Society included 300 members, all current or former Duke housestaff and faculty. The Society promotes the growth of Duke's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, major accomplishments include the establishment of a residency loan fund and the establishment of three professorships.
