Abstract

The Medical Center Library serves the Duke University Medical Center's academic, professional, research, teaching, and patient communities. The Library was conceived in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Wilburt C. Davison and early staff of the Duke University School of Medicine. This collection contains records of the Medical Center Library at Duke University. Materials were created by library directors or administrators and professional library staff. Types of materials include correspondence, reports, grants, articles, meeting minutes, job ads, proposals, meeting agendas, subject files, photographs, building blueprints, policies, publications, and digital files. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2021.

Some collections are stored off site and must be requested at least 48 business hours in advance for retrieval.

Access Restrictions

Contains Medical Center Administrative records. These include records of the officers of the University, as defined in the Bylaws, the deans of schools and colleges, and departments, institutes, and other offices as designated by the President. For a period of twenty-five years from the origin of the material, permission in writing from the director of the office of record and the Medical Center Archivist is required for use. After twenty-five years, records that have been processed may be consulted with the permission of the Medical Center Archivist. (Issued by the Office of the Chancellor, December 1, 1975).

15. IMLS Grant, 2003-2012

Series Scope and Contents: Contains materials relating to an IMLS funded grant between the Duke University Medical Center Library and the School of Library and Information Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). The grant helped start a program for third year Duke Medical students to transfer to the SILS program and complete a master's degree in either library or information science. The goal of the grant was to train medial informationists to have the skills to identify and evaluate information tools for physicians and patients, develop new clinical information tools, as well as help colleagues learn and apply literature-based evidence to patient care. The final report about the grant was published in January 2010 and covered from December 15, 2005 to December 14, 2009. Types of materials include grant proposals, correspondence, progress reports, presentations, student theses, publicity brochures, and flyers. Materials range in date from 2003 to 2012.

Historical Note

The Medical Center Library serves the Duke University Medical Center's academic, professional, research, teaching, and patient communities. The Library was conceived in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Wilburt C. Davison and early staff of the Duke University School of Medicine. From 1935 to 1975, the Library was housed in the basement of the School of Medicine in the Davison building.

With the advice and help of colleagues and Hospital Librarian, Judith Farrar, Davison began amassing a collection from book dealers throughout the world. For an average cost of three dollars per volume, he was able to create one of the best medical libraries in the country at that time for $227,000. Farrar was succeeded by G. S. T. Cavanagh in the early 1960's, and the Library services and staff were greatly expanded. Library automation began in 1965 with the appointment of a Chief of Library Systems, Warren Bird, who later succeeded Cavanagh as Director.

The Library is located within the Seeley G. Mudd building on the Medical Center campus. The building was constructed between 1973 and 1975. It opened in November 1975 and was dedicated May 8, 1976.
