    Samuel Katz graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship at Beth Israel Hospital followed by a residency in pediatrics at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston Children's Hospital. He also completed a research fellowship in virology and infectious diseases at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Katz joined the Duke faculty as chair of the Department of Pediatrics in 1968 and led the department until 1990. Today he continues to be active in vaccine policy development and pediatric HIV/AIDS research and care. He serves on the National Institutes of Health Committee for AIDS Vaccines, co-chairs the India-U.S. Vaccine Action Program and the National Network for Immunization Information. Katz is widely recognized for many contributions to children's health, including his role in developing the measles vaccine in use today. While a staff member at Boston Children's Hospital, Katz worked in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate John Enders to develop the attenuated measles virus vaccine.
