Biographical / historical:

William J. Donelan, a native of Washington, D.C., earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Wheeling Jesuit University in W.Va., and a master of management science degree from Duke University Fuqua School of Business. He joined Duke University Medical Center's administrative team in 1969 and served in a variety of management roles during his tenure, including chief operating officer of Duke University Hospital during the 1980s. With his 1990 appointment as vice chancellor for health affairs, Donelan assumed senior responsibility for overseeing the administrative and financial affairs of the medical center. He assumed his position with the health system when it was formed in 1998. Donelan served on numerous national and state health-related and professional organizations' boards, including the National Kidney Foundation, Association of American Medical Colleges, and the North Carolina Hospital Association. He also served on the Health Care Systems Governing Council of the American Hospital Association. Donelan's last position at Duke was the executive vice president and chief operating officer for Duke University Health System and vice chancellor for health affairs at Duke University. In this position, Donelan oversaw Duke's operations, guiding efforts to improve the quality, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility of patient care.

These include records of the officers of the University, as defined in the Bylaws, the deans of schools and colleges, and departments, institutes, and other offices as designated by the President. For a period of twenty-five years from the origin of the material, permission in writing from the director of the office of record and the University Archivist is required for use.
