Biographical / historical:

Born in 1925 in McComb, Mississippi, to George Lamar Maddox and Dimple Mae McEwen, George Lamar Maddox served as a First Sergeant in the US Army during World War II. In 1952, he graduated with a MA in social ethics from Boston University. He graduated with a doctorate in sociology and labor relations from Michigan State University in 1956. Maddox taught at Millsaps College in Mississippi before coming to Duke University as a Russell Sage Fellow in 1959.
At Duke, he became a faculty member in the Sociology Department. In 1972, Maddox was appointed director of the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. Maddox also served as the chairperson of the University Council on Aging and Human Development. During his tenure at Duke, Maddox also had sabbaticals and fellowships at St. Thomas Hospital in England, the London School of Economics, the University of Toronto, and Green College at Oxford University. In 1995, Maddox retired and was named a professor emeritus, but he remained active researching aging and policy until 2011. In 2005, Duke University awarded Maddox the Humanitarian Service Award for his work in civil rights, his service to older adults and the organizations that serve them, and his work improving educational opportunities in the Durham public schools.
During his retirement, Maddox became involved in the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. He was one of the founding members of the Duke University Retiree Outreach (DURO) organization that volunteered at Lakewood Elementary Schools.
Maddox served as president of the Gerontological Society of America and was a founding member of the National Advisory Council for the National Institute on Aging. He also served as the secretary general of the International Association of Gerontology.
In 1946, Maddox married Evelyn Godbold, and they had a daughter and son. Maddox died in 2012.
