Archives Internships Available

Title: Archives Intern

Reports to: Head of Technical Services

Location: Duke University Medical Center Archives, 1408A Christian Avenue, Durham, NC 27710 (2 miles from campus)

Schedule:  Maximum of 19 hours a week (for 42 weeks or a total of 807 hours), must be scheduled between Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30

Pay rate: $15.00 per hour

Position available: 2016-2017 Academic year, beginning July 1

Under the supervision of the Medical Center Archives staff, the intern will gain hands-on experience processing archival collections. This may include arrangement and description, rehousing materials, performing basic preservation tasks, researching individuals or events covered by a collection, entering data into the collections management system, and creating inventories and finding aids.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of archival principles, theories, and best practices
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate level, degree granting program
  • Strong communications skills
  • Ability to work independently

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an archives or library
  • 1st year student
  • Interest in medicine and/or history

The Duke University Medical Center Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to materials documenting the history of the medical center community, from the 1930s to the present. The Archives is comprised of over 250 collections containing a variety of materials, such as administrative and departmental records, personal manuscripts, photographs, publications, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and more.
