Historical Note

Major technological progress at Duke University Medical Center included the development of many vaccines, the creation of new centers programs, the treatment of cancer and diseases, the promotion of safety caps for poisonous substances, and the use of ultraviolet light in operating rooms to reduce infections, application or creative of innovative instruments, and development of techniques.

Title: Therapeutic bed with compressor, invention of J. Deryl Hart.
Decade: 1920
Image Description: In the late 1920s, J. Deryl Hart invented a variable pressure bed (or air mattress) to ease patient's bed sores. Hart patented many of his inventions, which also included a pneumatic bed, an operating room supply table, and a surgical basin with a stand for support.
