Abstract: Charles B. Hammond is professor emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University. Contains audiotapes and transcript of an oral history interview. Biographical/Historical NoteCharles Bessellieu Hammond was born in 1936 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. As the son of a career army colonel he attended the Citadel for three years. In 1959, he enrolled in Duke University as a second-year medical student (M.D., 1961). He subsequently completed an internship in surgery at Duke which included an obstetrics and gynecology residency, training for one year in the research training program, and a two-year post as a clinical associate at the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, Md.) in endocrinology. Dr. Hammond joined the faculty of Duke University School of Medicine faculty in 1968. He served as chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1970 to 1980. In 1980 he became chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he served until becoming Professor Emeritus 2002. As the E. C. Hamblen Professor of Reproductive Biology and Family Planning, his emphases have been primarily in reproductive endocrinology and infertility as well as placental malignancy, choriocarcinoma, and other diseases. Dr. Hammond has been active in many organizations in the obstetrics and gynecology field. He served as president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the American Gynecologic Club, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and as director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of the Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology, and has been actively involved in educational and administrative positions in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, including the chairmanship of District IV. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. Dr. Hammond has written or coauthored over 300 articles and chapters and is on the editorial board of five journals. In 2003, he received the Leonard Palumbo, Jr., MD, Faculty Achievement Award for compassionate patient care and excellence in the mentoring of young physicians.
