Abstract: E. Harvey Estes was a Durham Veterans Administration Hospital physician and administrator, and chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Contains audiotapes and transcript of and oral history interview. Subjects in this interview include Duke University Medical Center, Durham (N.C.), Department of Community and Family Medicine, and certain restricted topics. The interview was conducted in 2004 by Jessica Roseberry.

Biographical/Historical NoteEdward Harvey Estes was born in Gay, Ga. in 1925 and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (B.A., M.D.). He began his medical internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, and completed it at Duke University Hospital. Dr. Estes joined Duke's staff in 1953. He became chief of the cardiology service at Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital (1953-1954) and chief of the medical service at the (1958-1963). In 1966, Estes was selected to serve as the chair of Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Estes is past president of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina as well as the North Carolina Heart Association. He is a member of a many other professional organizations and has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific articles.
