A2007-014: Frederic Moir Hanes academic hood, cap, and gown

Contains Frederic Moir Hanes' academic hood, cap, and gown, which were formerly on display in the Department of Medicine. Other exhibit materials, including a picture of Hanes and an explanation of the regalia's lineage, are also included. The items have been passed down to numerous members of the Department of Medicine throughout the years. When Hanes, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, retired, he gave his cap and gown to Dr. William Nicholson, Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center from 1935 to 1974. Following Nicholson's retirement, the gown was given to Dr. Walter Floyd, also a graduate of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Floyd, a long time member of Duke's Division of Cardiology, wore the gown for many years at graduation ceremonies. When he retired, he gave the gown to Dr. Pelham Wilder, the university marshall. When Wilder retired, he gave the gown to Dr. Barton F. Haynes, the Frederic M. Hanes Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1995 to 2003, for display in the Department of Medicine.
