Historical Note

Duke University Medical Center began educating students in the 1930s with the School of Medicine opening for classes on October 2, 1930. School of Nursing classes began January 2, 1931. The first dean of the School of Medicine was Wilburt Cornell Davison. He served from 1927 to 1960. The first dean of the School of Nursing was Bessie Baker (1930-1938). Margaret Pinkerton (1939-1940) and Florence K. Wilson (1946-1954) subsequently served as dean.
