Abstract:
W. Kenneth Cuyler joined the Endocrine Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in 1938. After World War II, Cuyler studied at Cornell University under George Papanicolaou, who invented the vaginal (Pap) smear used to detect diseases in of the female reproductive system. After this training, Cuyler established the Genital Cytology Laboratory at Duke. Studies conducted in this laboratory helped to diagnose and treat women with pre-invasive cancer of the cervix. This collection contains W. Kenneth Cuyler's correspondence, grant applications, meeting minutes, publications, papers, and notes pertaining to obstetrics and gynecology, including cervical cancer and vaginal (Pap) smears.

Biographical Note

W. Kenneth Cuyler was born on 13 October 1900 in Austin, Tex. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in 1923. In 1929, he earned a masters degree in histology and embryology at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. From 1929 until 1938, he served as director of the clinical laboratory at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

In 1938, Cuyler joined the Endocrine Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center. He earned his PhD in physiology and biochemistry at Duke in 1941. After World War II, Cuyler studied at Cornell University under George Papanicolaou, who invented the vaginal (Pap) smear used to detect diseases in of the female reproductive system. After this training, Cuyler established the Genital Cytology Laboratory at Duke. Studies conducted in this laboratory helped to diagnose and treat women with pre-invasive cancer of the cervix.

Cuyler retired from Duke University Medical Center in 1970. He died in 1976 at the age of 75. He was married to Julia Anna Cuyler. The couple had one son, Robert Duncan Cuyler.
