Historical Note

Duke University Medical Center began educating students in the 1930s with the School of Medicine opening for classes on October 2, 1930. School of Nursing classes began January 2, 1931. These early beginnings in medical care and health education helped to lay the framework for a world-class teaching hospital facility.

Image Description: Watts Hospital was originally founded in 1895 with the philanthropic mission of free health care to all citizens. It was expanded and rebuilt, reopening in 1909. The hospital was so highly regarded that in 1922 James B. Duke, Governor Cameron Morrison and other proposed to create the state's first four-year medical college, Duke University, to educate students in conjunction with clinical services provided at Watts Hospital.
