Historical Note

The Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity was organized at the College of Medicine, University of Illinois on August 25, 1902. The name of the society was changed to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1934. The society's motto is "Worthy to serve the suffering." The society's primary goal is to recognize and perpetuate excellence in the medical profession.

The Duke University chapter, the Alpha chapter, was installed on April 29, 1931 with three members: Jay M. Arena, George W. Heinitsh, and John Fletcher Lovejoy. All were members of the 1932 class of the School of Medicine. The chapter has been continually active at Duke, with new members from the School of Medicine and hospital initiated each spring. Students are elected for membership by chapter members during their junior and senior years based on academic performance and personal qualities.

The Duke chapter activities include administration of a student-taught supplement to the second-year Physical Diagnosis course. During the annual Alpha Omega Alpha Original Studies Symposium, a one-day symposium during which medical students present their third-year research findings via either poster or platform presentations. The chapter also elects house staff, faculty and alumni whose academic and personal qualities demonstrate excellence in the profession. Ed Halperin, M.D. currently serves as councilor for the Duke Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha. Previous councilors have included James F. Glenn and Edward S. Orgain.
