HC 58 Ewald W. Busse Collection BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION President Emeritus, North Carolina Institute of Medicine Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Dean Emeritus, Medical & Allied Health Education at Duke University Medical Center Ewald W. Busse earned his B.A. degree at Westminster College, which awarded him the Sc.D. degree in 1960, and received his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1942. His psychiatric training was at the University of Colorado Medical Center. Dr. Busse joined the Duke University faculty as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry in 1953, a position he held for twenty-one years. Between 1974 and 1982 he served as Dean of Medical and Allied Health Education and Associate Provost. In 1965 he was named J.P. Gibbons Professor of Psychiatry. He held numerous positions within the Medical Center including chief of staff. He became professor emeritus in 1987. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine 1987-1994. He has served as president of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Geriatrics Society, the Gerontological Society of America, the American Association of Departments of Psychiatry, the Southern Psychiatric Association, the Southeastern Medical-Dental Society, and the International Association of Gerontology. Dr. Busse is a member of the Academy of Sciences - Institute of Medicine and was director of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for eight years. Dr. Busse held the position of founding director of the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development from 1957 to 1970. He has received numerous research and professional awards including the Edward B. Allen Award, 1967; the Strecker Award, 1967, the Kleemeier Award, 1968; the Menninger Award, 1971; the Modern Medicine Award, 1971; Freeman Award, 1978; the Thewlis Award, 1979; the Brookdale Award, 1982; the Sandoz Award, 1983; the Weinberg Memorial Award, 1983; the Alumni Achievement Award (Westminster College), 1984; a Commendation for Leadership, Commitment, and Dedication to Service on behalf of Aging Veterans, 1985; the Warren Williams Assembly Speaker's Award (APE), 1987; Distinguished Service Award (APA), 1988; the Distinguished Alumne Award (Washington University, St. Louis), 1992; the President's medallion for Gerontological Research (International Association of Gerontology, Budapest), 1993; the Pioneer Award from the Governor's Commission on Reduction of Infant Mortality; and he was recognized for Contribution to Gerontology in Latin America by the Latin American Committee of Gerontology, 1993. He was honored in 1985 with the dedication of the E.W. Busse Building (gerontology building) at Duke University. An international research award was established in 1990 honoring Dr. Busse, in addition the N.C. Department of Human Resources established the Ewald W. Busse Award in 1990. Busse was a member of the President's Biomedical Research Panel 1976-77 and was made a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1981. For the Veterans Administration he chaired for four years the Geriatrics and Gerontology Advisory Committee and served for six years as a member of the Special medical Advisory Group. He was a member of the jury for the International Sandoz Prize for Gerontological Research and has served as the chairman of the jury. He has been on the DHR Advisory Committee on Home and Community Care since 1989. He is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology. Author and Coauthor of more than 360 scientific articles, Dr. Busse has edited several books, including: Behavior and Adaption in Late Life; Mental Illness in Later Life; The Handbook of Geriatric Psychiatry; The Duke Longitudinal Studies of Normal Aging 1955-1980; Aging - The Universal Human Experience (1987); and Geriatric Psychiatry (1989). A long-time member of the Durham Rotary Club, he served as its President in 1972-73.
